What will you do?
As a SeniorFront-End Engineer at Bixal, you will play a pivotal role in maintaining and evolving the VA Design System (VADS) and VA Forms Library. You’ll work alongside a multidisciplinary team to build and optimize reusable, accessible web and mobile components that scale across VA digital services. Your contributions will directly impact millions of Veterans and their families, ensuring they have seamless, efficient, and user-friendly experiences when accessing VA benefits and services.

This is a full-time position contingent on contract award by our client, with a defined performance period of up to one year. Responsibilities
  • Build and optimize reusable front-end components using React.js, USWDS, and modern front-end technologies.
  • Enhance the VA Design System (VADS) and Forms Library, ensuring consistency and usability.
  • Work with design and development teams to improve the Veteran-facing digital experience.
  • Implement Section 508, WCAG 2.2 AA, and Mobile Content Accessibility Guidelines (MCAG) compliance.
  • Optimize web and mobile components for performance and seamless interactions.
  • Collaborate with UX designers and researchers to refine user flows and interaction patterns.
  • Help eliminate inconsistencies in Veteran-facing digital forms and applications.
  • Work in agile sprints with cross-functional teams to deliver high-quality software.
  • Participate in code reviews, sprint planning, and backlog grooming to maintain development velocity.
  • Assist in the migration of VAHB mobile design components into VADS.
  • Maintain shared Figma libraries and documentation for design and development teams.
  • Contribute to experimental designs and help convert them into stable system components

  • Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree, plus at least four years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in front-end development with React.js, JavaScript/TypeScript, HTML, and CSS (SASS/SCSS).
  • Experience working with design systems, component libraries, and accessibility best practices.
  • Knowledge of modern build tools (Webpack, Vite) and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Understanding of RESTful APIs, GitHub workflows, and version control.
  • Experience with mobile-first and responsive design principles.

  • Nice to haves
  • Experience with the U.S. Web Design System (USWDS) or other government-focused design systems.
  • Familiarity with React Native for mobile development.
  • Previous experience with VA.gov, VAHB mobile app, or other federal platforms.
  • Knowledge of Drupal or CMS platforms used in government services.
