What will you do?
As a Front-End Engineer at Bixal, you will play a pivotal role in maintaining and evolving the VA Design System (VADS) and VA Forms Library. You’ll work alongside a multidisciplinary team to build and optimize reusable, accessible web and mobile components that scale across VA digital services. Your contributions will directly impact millions of Veterans and their families, ensuring they have seamless, efficient, and user-friendly experiences when accessing VA benefits and services.
 
Important Note:
This is a full-time position contingent on contract award by our client, with a defined performance period of up to one year. Responsbilities
  • Develop and maintain responsive, reusable, and accessible front-end components for VA.gov and the VA Health & Benefits mobile app.
  • Collaborate with designers, UX researchers, and back-end engineers to implement user-friendly interfaces that follow the U.S. Web Design System (USWDS) and VA Design System (VADS) standards.
  • Write clean, scalable, and maintainable code in React, React Native, and JavaScript/TypeScript.
  • Ensure compliance with Section 508, WCAG 2.2 AA, and Mobile Content Accessibility Guidelines (MCAG).
  • Participate in code reviews, sprint planning, and agile ceremonies as part of a cross-functional team.
  • Optimize front-end performance for web and mobile applications.
  •  Stay up to date with best practices in design systems, component-based architecture, and front-end development.

  • Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree, plus at least four years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • Proficiency in React and JavaScript/TypeScript.
  • Experience with CSS, HTML, and responsive design principles.
  • Familiarity with design systems, component-based development, state management, and tools like Stencil and StoryBook.
  • Basic knowledge of RESTful APIs and Git-based workflows.
  • Understanding of accessibility standards (Section 508, WCAG 2.2 AA, ARIA roles, screen readers like JAWS & NVDA, etc.).
  • User-Centered Mindset – Passion for creating inclusive, accessible experiences for Veterans, service members, and their families.
  • Collaboration & Communication – Ability to work effectively in a remote, agile team and communicate complex technical concepts clearly.
  • Problem-Solving – A proactive, solution-oriented approach to tackling technical challenges.
  • Adaptability & Growth – Eagerness to learn new technologies and iterate on solutions based on feedback.

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance.

  • Nice to haves
  • Experience with React Native for mobile development.
  • Knowledge of Figma and working with design teams.
  • Familiarity with Drupal CMS or other government platforms.
  • Previous experience in federal contracting or civic tech.
