Job Description

About FieldWrk:

FieldWrk is a specialized branding and marketing agency dedicated to serving the essential industries that build and support our society. We exist to help hardworking people and companies reach their full potential.

Partnering with companies in civil construction, design, engineering, waste management, energy infrastructure, mining, and other markets, we help our clients stand out and scale their business through branding, storytelling, and marketing that doesn’t just look good, but actually wrks.

Your Mission:

Your mission as WordPress Web Developer, should you choose to accept it, is to help us build and maintain the most impactful, user-friendly, and well-built websites for the clients we serve.

How You’ll Spend Your Time:

  • Using detailed Figma mockups and UI systems, you’ll custom-code (using FieldWrk coding standards) full websites and new functionality for existing websites that meet the technical needs of our clients, while beautifully sharing their stories, creating business opportunities, showcasing their hard work/authenticity, and attracting a new generation of workers.
  • Work closely with the Director of Web Development to maintain coding standards (frontend and backend), keep code repositories up-to-date, and deliver websites that are simple, clean and easy-to-maintain/easy-to-use.
  • Populate and manage the content of websites including images, videos, copy, metadata, and custom post types, all provided by our team of copywriters, photographers, videographers, and designers.
  • Ensure the technical functionality and health of all hosted websites and conduct periodic QA processes.

These are some of our recently launched websites:

  • Superior Bowen (https://superiorbowen.com)
  • Rifenburg (https://rifenburg.com)
  • Meyer (https://meyerci.com)

What you will get to do day-to-day (key responsibilities):

  • Develop new websites using custom Wordpress themes with simple file structures (no compilers).
  • Use Figma for reference and assets.
  • Troubleshoot issues with existing websites.
  • Develop new features for existing websites.
  • Utilize Figma and Photoshop to ensure all imagery is web-ready and populate into websites.
  • Utilize Figma and Adobe Illustrator to adjust graphics as needed for web.
  • Copy-paste and reformat copy into websites.
  • Maintain GitHub code repositories for 50+ websites with multiple team members.
  • Monitor and resolve issues with hosted websites utilizing services such as WPEngine and WP Remote.
  • Properly use development/production environments with multiple active branches.
  • Adhere to all company coding standards and best practices.

Requirements

What you bring:

  • At least 3 years of experience coding custom Wordpress websites
  • Expert knowledge of Advanced Custom Fields Wordpress plugin
  • Expert in HTML/CSS/jQuery/PHP
  • Very proficient using the Bootstrap framework
  • Knowledge of GitHub or similar code-versioning tool
  • Proficient use of Figma
  • Experience with WPEngine is a plus
  • Experience with Gravity Forms Wordpress plugin is a plus
  • Experience working with ATS systems (XML feeds/API) is a plus
  • Graphic design experience is a plus (we need a developer with a visual eye)
  • Willing to work a standard 40 hour work week remotely
  • Available during CST hours (9 AM-5 PM CT)

You will have the best opportunity to succeed in this role if:

  • You are willing to learn and code to company standards.
  • You are quick, efficient, and detail-oriented when developing custom Wordpress websites.
  • You have a strong visual eye that allows you to create beautiful websites based off detailed design mockups.
  • You make it a priority to build custom websites that are easy to use by non-code people.
  • You are realistic with your time.
  • If you need help, you ask. If you are confused, you ask. If you don’t know, you say so. It’s ok if you don’t know the answer right now.
  • You care about your code; you make it pretty. You use proper spacing, align elements, and use the same syntax throughout the site.
  • You are a good communicator. You are thorough in your explanations and do not use technical jargon when talking to non-technical people.
  • You like to maintain a simple file structure and use standard/tried and true languages.
  • You agree with a minimal-plugin approach to Wordpress websites.
  • You have a strong desire to make a positive impact for hardworking industries and the clients we’re fortunate enough to serve

From a cultural perspective, a great candidate is:

  • People-first: Collaborative, kind, and clear.
  • Self-starter: Highly disciplined and self-motivated to get things done and learn.
  • Scrappy and curious: You find a way and iterate often.
  • Detail-obsessed: You care about both the pixels and the code syntax.
  • Brave and humble: Willing to push, but always eager to learn.

Our approach to AI:

“If I can’t explain why this line of code exists, and how it functions, it doesn’t belong”

AI-induced technical debt will not be tolerated. We must write and understand our code. This is important for ongoing maintenance but more important fundamentally for FieldWrk and our clients. We believe in using our minds, hands, and creativity to create a custom, safe, and useful product for our clients that we understand fully and can maintain future-forward.

Our approach is to keep the human the driver and to treat AI as a reviewer or specialized tester rather than a generator. This means asking questions rather than dictating commands.

AI Application Note — We are a team of real humans who work hard, serve great clients, and protect our culture. If you're hitting auto-apply or too lazy to craft real, thoughtful, and personalized responses (or a cover letter) for why you want to join us at FieldWrk, this probably isn't the right role for you!
