For one of our clients, we are looking for a Staff Backend Engineer, working remotely from Washington, DC, USA.

As a Staff Backend Engineer, you will be responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining scalable backend solutions for client-facing web applications. You will work with modern open-source technologies, cloud platforms, and event-driven architectures to build robust and efficient systems. This role requires strong collaboration with cross-functional teams, including product managers, engineers, and designers, to ensure seamless integration of backend capabilities with front-end interfaces. You will also contribute to performance optimization, security best practices, and continuous improvements in system reliability.

Accountabilities:

  • Develop, iterate, and test scalable backend features for web applications.
  • Implement and integrate cloud-based solutions in coordination with platform support teams.
  • Collaborate with leadership to gather and translate business requirements into technical solutions.
  • Work closely with designers and engineers to ensure smooth front-end and back-end integration.
  • Maintain, optimize, and enhance existing applications to improve performance and security.
  • Participate in Agile processes, including standups, sprint planning, and retrospectives.
  • Provide support and troubleshooting assistance for backend systems.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of experience in backend development.
  • Expertise in Python and deep knowledge of APIs, including RESTful APIs, GraphQL, and JSON-RPC.
  • Hands-on experience with cloud platforms, preferably AWS (EKS, MSK, OpenSearch).
  • Experience with event-driven architectures and containerization (Docker, Kubernetes).
  • Strong background in relational and non-relational databases (SQL, MySQL, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Redis).
  • Experience with infrastructure-as-code tools (Terraform preferred).
  • Proficiency in DevOps workflows, Git, CI/CD, and automated testing.
  • Strong knowledge of authentication and authorization systems (Active Directory, Okta, AWS IAM).
  • Experience with monitoring and performance engineering tools (Grafana, Sentry, Prometheus).
  • Ability to obtain and maintain an MRPT clearance.
  • Strong documentation, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Must be located within the United States and able to work Eastern Time Zone hours.
  • Occasional travel may be required (less than 25% annually).
