Position Overview
The Sales Tax & Staff Accountant is responsible for preparing and filing sales and use tax returns while ensuring compliance with tax regulations and other government filing requirements. This role provides leadership in Accounting and Finance by delivering timely and accurate financial and operational reporting and maintaining regulatory compliance.

Essential Job Functions

  • Prepare and file multiple monthly Sales and Use Tax returns.
  • Review company records and accounts to determine required Use Tax payments.
  • Analyze general ledger accounts and reconcile sales tax payable and prepaid sales tax accounts.
  • Maintain tax exemption certificates from customers and prepare required resale certificates for suppliers.
  • Monitor activity and sales thresholds at the state level for potential sales tax exposure due to economic nexus standards.
  • Research and analyze Sales and Use tax issues, documenting positions used to support tax treatment.
  • Communicate with state agencies for tax registrations and issue resolution.
  • Stay updated on current sales tax regulations relevant to the organization.
  • Analyze tax law changes and present updates to management.
  • Assist in tax audits, including direct involvement in the audit process.
  • Guide financial decisions by recommending, monitoring, and enforcing policies related to inventory tracking (In-Transit and Purchases Received Not Billed).
  • Establish and enforce internal controls related to expense report audits and reviews.
  • Perform month-end reporting, account reconciliations, and prepare reports for line-of-credit reporting.
  • Execute general accounting functions and other duties as assigned.

Required Skills & Competencies:

  • Strong understanding of accounting principles, including debits and credits, financial statements, general ledger, and trial balance.
  • Experience with AvaTax and CertCapture is a plus.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, with advanced Excel skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Self-starter with hands-on experience in coaching, mentoring, training, and issue resolution.
  • Highly organized, detail-oriented, and capable of multitasking in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
  • Ability to drive change, anticipate outcomes, and proactively plan to ensure success.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment as well as independently.
  • Authorization to work in the United States.

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • 6+ years of experience in accounting with a focus on multi-state Sales & Use Tax.

Language & Communication Skills

  • Ability to read and comprehend instructions, correspondence, and memos.
  • Ability to write professional correspondence.
  • Strong ability to present information effectively in one-on-one and small group settings.

Mathematical Skills

  • Proficiency in calculating figures such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, and percentages.
  • Ability to apply basic algebraic concepts and work with fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions in practical situations.

Reasoning & Problem-Solving Abilities

  • Adaptability to challenging situations and the ability to balance, execute, and prioritize tasks.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, including data collection, fact analysis, and valid conclusion drawing.

Computer & Software Proficiency

  • Highly proficient with computers and various accounting software.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and cloud-based ERP systems such as QuickBooks or NetSuite.
