SwingDev—a hippo company is the Polish branch of a fast-growing InsurTech product company – Hippo Insurance. We’re here to make home insurance smarter and more proactive, using tech to bring fresh solutions. About the role: 

You have an opportunity to join an exciting greenfield project at the heart of our business as a Senior Back-end Engineer, where your work will have a direct and lasting impact. You’ll help build a modern technology stack from the ground up for a hybrid insurance carrier, tackling complex, large-scale data challenges and shaping foundational systems that will support years of growth. We’re already a few months into the project, developing data ingestion pipelines, internal services, and our first application for key stakeholders. You’ll have the chance to become a domain expert, take on leadership challenges, and contribute to Hippo's business-critical, fast-growing insurtech venture. You’ll collaborate with an experienced team, influence architecture decisions, and play a key role in preparing the platform for dynamic, long-term growth. 


What will you do?
  • You’ll design, build, and maintain reliable backend solutions that form the foundation of our systems. 
  • You'll act as a technical leader within the team, taking ownership of projects or domains, guiding technical decisions, and helping other engineers grow.
  • You’ll partner closely with product, data engineering, analytics, and business teams across multiple domains to drive meaningful projects from concept to delivery. 
  • You’ll actively shape our software architecture, bringing your ideas and expertise into technical discussions. 
  • You’ll work hand-in-hand with product and quality assurance teams to ensure your code meets the highest standards of reliability and performance. 
  • You’ll balance maintaining existing systems with developing new features, ensuring stability while pushing innovation.

  • Have 5+ years of professional experience in software development. 
  • Are proficient in TypeScript and production experience building services with NestJS, with a strong grasp of backend development patterns. 
  • Have experience designing and operating data models and queries for large/complex databases (high volume, complex schemas, performance/consistency concerns).
  •  Have successfully build asynchronous, event-driven workflows in a microservices architecture (queues/pub-sub/fan-out; retries and failure handling) 
  • Have a track record of leadership and mentorship, guiding teammates, and sharing your experience. 
  • Understand and follow software development best practices, including code quality, testing, CI/CD, documentation, observability and maintainability. 
  • Take ownership of your work, showing accountability and a drive to deliver impactful, end-to-end solutions. 
  • Actively participate in discussions, sharing ideas and contributing to team decisions, as well as acting as a mentor for others.
  • Are a great partner for product, analytics, and business teams. 
  • Seek feedback and mentorship for continuous growth. 
  • Have a great command of English (written & spoken).   
  • Are available to work in the afternoon hours, including occasional evening meetings due to U.S. time zone collaboration (we respect work-life balance but prioritize effective communication)

  • Experience with AWS (core services used in microservice environments). 
  • Familiarity with data warehousing/analytics platforms (DWH), and collaborating with analytics on data needs.
