Human Resources Manager (Contract)

About the Role
The Human Resources Manager is a hands-on, operational HR professional responsible for executing and maintaining core HR functions with a strong focus on California compliance, systems administration, workforce planning support, and talent process execution. 

This role reports to our VP of HR and ensures day-to-day HR operations run smoothly, compliantly, and efficiently. The ideal candidate brings 5+ years of progressive HR experience, strong working knowledge of California employment law, advanced ADP expertise, and experience working in nonprofit and/or startup environments. 


Responsibilities - HR Operations & Compliance
  • Administer and maintain compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws, with emphasis on California regulations (wage and hour, leave laws, meal/rest periods, classification, etc.). 
  • Execute and manage California Alternate Work Schedule (AWS) processes, including documentation, opt-in tracking, election requirements, and compliance monitoring. 
  • Handle employee relations matters, conduct investigations, and prepare documentation for corrective actions and terminations. 
  • Update and distribute HR policies, procedures, and handbook revisions. 
  • Support audits and compliance reporting as needed. 

  • Responsibilities - Workforce Planning & Organizational Support
  • Maintain workforce data including headcount tracking, utilization reports, and position control. 
  • Support leadership with workforce planning data and reporting. 
  • Assist in updating job descriptions and organizational charts. 
  • Track workforce metrics and provide operational reports to leadership. 

  • Responsibilities - HR Systems & Reporting
  • Serve as primary HRIS administrator for ADP Workforce Now (or similar ADP platform). 
  • Maintain data accuracy within ADP including job changes, status updates, and reporting fields. 
  • Generate regular and ad hoc HR reports (headcount, turnover, leave tracking, compliance metrics). 
  • Utilize project management tools (e.g., Asana, Monday.com, Smartsheet, Jira) to track HR initiatives and deadlines. 
  • Identify and recommend process improvements within HR systems to enhance operational efficiency. 

  • Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field. 
  • 5+ years of hands-on HR experience. 
  • Strong working knowledge of California employment law. 
  • Experience administering Alternate Work Schedules (AWS). 
  • Experience supporting competency-based performance management. 
  • Experience coordinating or administering 9-Box talent review processes. 
  • Advanced proficiency in ADP (Workforce Now preferred). 
  • Strong HRIS data management and reporting skills. 
  • Experience in nonprofit and/or startup environments. 
  • Strong documentation, organization, and execution skills. 
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities with attention to detail. 

  • Preferred Qualifications
  • PHR, SPHR, SHRM-CP, or SHRM-SCP certification. 
  • Experience supporting multi-state organizations.
