Job Description

The Product Owner ensures that business goals, client needs, and technical execution remain aligned throughout the production lifecycle. They operate as both a Product Owner and Business Analyst, responsible for gathering business requirements, identifying constraints, clarifying objectives, and translating them into clear, actionable work for the production team.

They own the backlog, prioritization, and delivery alignment, acting as the bridge between clients, the Solutions Architect, and the Production Team. The Product Owner defines what should be built, why it matters, and when it should be delivered, ensuring that each sprint drives measurable value and supports stakeholder objectives.

Requirements

Key Roles

1. Discovery & Backlog Management

Owns the translation of business requirements into clearly defined, prioritized backlog items that are ready for production.

Responsibilities:

  • Leads structured discovery sessions to uncover business goals, workflows, constraints, and measurable success criteria.
  • Converts discovery findings into structured epics, user stories, and acceptance criteria.
  • Ensures backlog items are complete, testable, and aligned with business objectives.
  • Partners with the Solutions Architect to validate feasibility and technical alignment.
  • Continuously refines and prioritizes the backlog to ensure highest-value work is sequenced appropriately.
  • Defines and maintains a clear Definition of Done to support QA and delivery consistency.
  • Identifies dependencies, risks, and sequencing considerations within the backlog.
  • Ensures stories are production-ready before entering sprint planning.

2. Sprint Planning & Delivery Alignment

Ensures alignment between business priorities and technical execution during active sprints.

Responsibilities:

  • Prepares and prioritizes backlog items so they are clearly defined, scoped, and ready for sprint planning.
  • Collaborates with the Solutions Architect and Production Team to ensure stories are refined, technically validated, and properly estimated.
  • Partners in sprint planning by clearly articulating sprint goals, priorities, and acceptance criteria.
  • Ensures the sprint objective reflects measurable business value.
  • Provides ongoing clarification during the sprint to remove ambiguity and unblock developers.
  • Reviews completed stories against defined acceptance criteria and accepts or rejects work accordingly.
  • Works with the Scrum Master to monitor sprint progress and adjust priorities when necessary.

3. Client Communication, Discovery & Expectation Management

Owns the client relationship within the context of production, ensuring structured discovery, clear communication, and alignment between business objectives and technical execution.

Responsibilities:

  • Asks probing questions to clarify assumptions and surface hidden requirements.
  • Documents business requirements and validates understanding with stakeholders.
  • Communicates scope, trade-offs, and sequencing in clear business terms.
  • Manages expectations around timeline and prioritization in collaboration with the Delivery Lead.
  • Gathers post-sprint feedback and integrates insights into backlog refinement.
  • Partners with the Solutions Architect and Delivery Lead to ensure business priorities align with delivery capacity.

4. Quality & Handoff

Owns validation of delivered work from a business and user-value perspective and ensures clean handoffs to stakeholders.

Responsibilities:

  • Confirms completed features meet the defined business objectives and acceptance criteria.
  • Reviews delivered functionality prior to client review to ensure alignment with documented requirements.
  • Collaborates with the Solutions Architect and QA Engineer to ensure acceptance criteria are clear, testable, and outcome-driven.
  • Approves or rejects stories based on business alignment before client release.
  • Ensures completed work is properly documented and transitioned to client stakeholders or internal support.

Qualifications

  • Proven experience as a Product Owner, Business Analyst, Digital Producer, Technical Lead, Engineer, or similar role within a digital agency or e-commerce environment.
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience working within the Shopify ecosystem (themes, apps, metafields, checkout extensibility, APIs).
  • Strong understanding of Agile/Scrum frameworks and sprint-based delivery.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate business goals into clearly defined epics, stories, and testable acceptance criteria.
  • Experience leading structured discovery sessions and gathering detailed business requirements.
  • Strong collaboration skills, with the ability to bridge communication between clients, engineers, designers, and operational stakeholders.
  • Highly detail-oriented with disciplined documentation, prioritization, and backlog management habits.
  • Familiarity with project management tools like ClickUp, Jira, or Asana.
